About Development Disabilities

Developmental disabilities are a diverse group of severe chronic conditions that are due to life-long, mental and/or physical impairments. People with developmental disabilities have problems with major life activities such as language, mobility, learning, self-help, and independent living. Developmental disabilities begin anytime during development up to 22 years of age and usually last throughout a person’s lifetime.

Developmental disabilities are categorized into five main types: mental retardation, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, autism, and neurological impairments.  It is estimated that 10 million Americans live with some form of developmental disabilities.

Arc of Onondaga’s mission is to assist individuals with developmental disabilities to achieve their fullest potential.  Independence and inclusion in the community are important elements of achieving these goals.  At Arc of Onondaga, we believe that all individuals are to be respected, contributing members of our community and the each person has the right to choose and pursue their own paths and goals for growth and development.
