First Books Distributed to Parkside Children
Parkside Children’s Center distributed free books to pre-school students on Wednesday, June 6, made possible by a First Book grant. Each Parkside student was able to select several new books to take home with them free of charge. Parents were invited to join their children in selecting their books while Parkside staff served ice cream.
Local First Book representative, Arlene Melchiorre from the Syracuse University Mary Ann Shaw Center for Public & Community Service, attended Wednesday’s book distribution. She was joined by Stanfort J. Perry, Arc Executive Director and Susan Prince, Director of Parkside. “We are very happy to be a recipient of a First Book grant,” said Stanfort Perry. “Being able to provide our Parkside families with children’s books to encourage more reading and literacy is very important to us.” Founded in 1992, First Book is a non-profit organization whose mission is to give children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books. Parkside recognizes that early childhood and family literacy are key components to a child’s success in school and in life. Arc of Onondaga’s Parkside Children’s Center is an inclusive, private pre-school with wrap-around day care. Parkside has been educating children since 1952. Serving children ages 2 to 5, Parkside places the emphasis on preparing each student for further education by determining each child’s developmental and educational needs. Arc of Onondaga is the largest non-profit provider of services for individuals with developmental disabilities in the county. Arc of Onondaga, a division of NYSARC, Inc., serves over 3,000 individuals and family members at 37 local sites. It is the mission of Arc of Onondaga to assist individuals with developmental disabilities in achieving their fullest potential.
